Networks in Computer Science

Computer Network

Introduction to Computer Network

We are in a network world. Information is being created, shared, and tracked all over the world in real time. It's possible since nearly everybody and everything within the digital world are connected with one another somehow.
A set of two or more things or individuals connected to each other is known as network. Some of the examples of network in our daily life includes:
• Social network
 • Mobile network
 • Computer network of computers
 • Airline, rail, bank, hospital networks
A computer network  is an interconnection between two or more computers or computing devices.
Such interconnection permits computers to exchange data and share resources between them. An elementary network could link some computers that are set in a room. The size of the network can be small or big varying with the number of computers that it serves.A network of computers may consist of various types of hosts referred to as nodes such as server, desktop, laptop, cellular phones.

Evolution of Networking

In the 1960s a research project was commissioned by Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the U.S. Department of Defence to connect the academic and research institutions located at different places for scientific collaborations. The first message was communicated between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Stanford Research Institute (SRI). Slowly but gradually, more and more organisations joined the ARPANET, and many independent smaller networks were formed. Few of the milestones in the magnificent journey of evolution of computer networks is depicted in the timeline.
